Our idea is to make a fiction film, based on real facts.

In Chaco, Argentina, the ranchers are planting soybean over the indian reservations and along all the land they find in their way.
The story begins when a Shaman (Piogonaq in Toba’s languaje) is taken off of his reservation and thrown into the forest. While on the run, he meets Siriaco, an alcoholic woodcutter that has also been thrown off his lands.
They begin a teacher – disciple relationship in the way of “Don Juan – Carlos Castañeda”. This is the beginning of a journey across the Toba’s oniric world, through altered states of consciousness.

En Chaco, Argentina los Pulls Sojeros están plantando en las tierras de las reservaciones indígenas y en toda al tierra que encuentran a su paso.

La historia comienza cuando un chamán (Piogonaq en lengua Toba) es despojado de sus tierras y arrojado al monte. Mientras huye, conoce a Siriaco, un hachero alcohólico que también fue despojado de sus tierras.

Entonces comienzan una relación Maestro – discípulo al estilo “Don Juan – Carlos Castañeda”. Este será el inicio de un viaje por el mundo onírico de los Tobas, a través de estados de conciencia no ordinarios.

Based on twenty years of fieldwork, the book “SER EN EL SUEÑO” (TO BE IN THE DREAM. Pablo G. Wright, Buenos Aires, Ed. Biblos, “Culturalia”, 2008) is an aproach to the shamanic side of the Toba culture.

In this work the antropologist Pablo G. Wright jumps over the scientific method many times, establishing a close relationship with the subject of his study. Escaping not only of the anthropologic method: He chooses to build the narration more like a novel, appealing to the human side of the relation. Reaching deep level of commitment on the part of the Tobas. And in consequence, this is reflected on his work.

Basado en veinte años de trabajo de campo, el libro “SER EN EL SUEÑO” (Pablo G. Wright, Buenos Aires, Ed. Biblos, “Culturalia”, 2008) es una aproximación al costado chamánico de la cultura Toba.

En este trabajo el antropólogo Pablo G. Wright salta sobre el método científico varias veces, estableciendo una estrecha relación con el sujeto de la investigación. Escapando no solo de la metodología antropológica: el elige novelar la experiencia, apelando al costado mas humano de la relación. Logrando una estrecha relación con los Tobas. En consecuencia esto se refleja en su obra: profunda y humana.

Argentina: Tribes and languajes

The Chaco region in the north of Argentina and part of Paraguay was formerly covered with forests. The Toba were originally nomadic hunter-gatherers who, upon the arrival of the Spanish, adopted the horse and resisted colonial encroachment and missionization for several centuries.

In the 1880s the Argentine government began a campaign to occupy new territories, defeating the last organized attempts by the Toba to defend their lands. The Argentine Chaco was divided up in large portions and exploited, especially for the valuable quebracho tree, used for its tannin and its extremely durable timber. This devastated the ecosystem in a relatively short time. The private owners of the Chaco then turned to cotton production, employing the Toba as a cheap seasonal workforce; the conditions did not change substantially for decades.

The Toba language is a member of the Guaicuruan linguistic group. According to the United Nations, it has around 60,000 speakers, of which 15,000 to 20,000 live in Argentina.

Piogonaq means Shaman in Toba’s language.

Our goal is to rescue the Toba people’s “Cosmologies”: the way they understand the world, their Gods and the particular relationship they have with nature.

In this culture, the Oniric experience, in the world of dreams, has the same relevance as the waking hours. In fact, they reach the highest levels of their society through shamanic experiences.

Our idea is to make a fiction film, based on real facts.

As we can see in this draw from the book “SER EN EL SUEÑO” (TO BE IN THE DREAM. Pablo G. Wright, Buenos Aires, Ed. Biblos, “Culturalia”, 2008), the Piogonaq has to climb the sacred totem to get his power. Once at the year, the Shaman got permission to go there. That is the time of the “cebil”.  This totem only exists in the in the world of dreams.
